Saving A Bit Of Green While Being Green!

I love how handy disinfectant wipes are, but I really dislike anything disposable. Every time I threw one away, I swear I heard a tiny green fairy weep in the distance. Well, now she can dry her tears, because I found a way to keep my handy disinfectant wipes, help the environment, and save money. Win-win...oh, and win!

You will need:

  • A used disinfectant wipe container
  • Microfiber cloths, or a package of all-purpose cloths (found in the automotive section, I believe)
  • 40 drops of Tea Tree oil
  • 1/2 cup of white vinegar
  • 1/2 Water

Tea Tree and vinegar are all-natural and very effective disinfectants, especially Tea Tree, which has strong anti-viral, anti-bacterial, and anti-fungal properties.

First, take 5 cloths, lay them on top of each other, then tightly roll up the cloths.

Next, stuff them into your container the best you can.

Add 1/2 cup of vinegar, and push the rags down to soak up the liquid. Then put your 40 drops of Tea Tree oil into your 1/2 cup of water and pour into the container. Push the rags down again to soak up. Put the lid back on, and pull your cloths from the middle. Voila! You have your homemade, reusable disinfectant cloths!

Wash the cloths in warm or hot cycle and tumble dry on high.

Excellent idea! One question though-- where can I buy Tea Tree Oil?

hecate-horus profile image

hecate-horus Hub Author 3 months ago

Suzie, thanks for stopping by! You can buy Tea Tree Oil at your local health food store, but I buy mine online in bulk. It's cheaper per oz. Here's a great website for essential oils: http://www.wholesalesuppliesplus.com/StoreCategory

Tea tree oil is also availabe on Amazon. You can also adapt this idea to make reusable baby wipes. I wrote a hub about ways to save and reuse baby wipes.

Congrats on hub of the day.

As you stated, this idea is an around winner. I like knowing exactly what are in the wipes I am using; no "mystery" ingredients here.

Voted up and SHARED.

Very useful! I might give that a try. I have used tea tree soap as well as other products with it as an ingredient. Clever...................thanks!

This is a very creative and useful idea! I love using antibacterial wipes since they are so convenient, but hated throwing them away too. This is a great solution. Thanks for sharing!

Great tip! I love tea tree oil. It has so many uses. My favorite is it's wart/mole removal properties. Trader Joe's actually has tea tree oil for pretty cheap. Thyme and Rosemary essential oils are also great disenfectants as well. They actually don't smell as strong as tea tree.

If the tiny green fairy wipes her eyes AND blows her nose on one of your wipes, is throwing it out the best sanitary practice? Congrats on Hub of the Day!! ;)

This is a very useful hub! I wonder: does the smell of the tea tree oil balance out the smell of the vinegar? I like to clean with vinegar but sometimes the smell gets to me.

Congrats on the Hub of the Day!

I use distilled white vinegar for lot of household chores, but I love your idea of using the cotton cloths and container for handi portable wipes! I really dislike the clorox wipes the supermarkets hand out - Next shopping trip I will bring my own. Thanks!

Actually, we did some work for a cool bunch of people that sell a product that essentially turns water and small amount of salt into a disinfectant as strong as White King, only you wont have your insides burned out if you accidently drunk it.

Their url was www.toucangreensolutions.com.au

We got to play with their product for a week whilst copywriting their site... very impressive I must say!
